Arrows Toward the Sun
Before the attempted cultural domination of Northern Europe via colonization and imperialism, most maps had east at the top. The word orientation contains orient, which refers to the east, but really comes from the Latin word for rising. The sun rises in the east. Well, really, the sun doesn’t rise, we turn. The Earth rotates eastward, on an invisible axis, toward the sun. We are always spinning, which is good to remember. These are just a tool for knowing your place.
Arrows Toward the Sun is an ongoing project to be installed in homes, offices, and institutions. An arrow hangs on the wall pointing due east, the direction the earth is spinning towards the sun, from the center of the room.
